May’s full moon—which will reach peak illumination on the 23rd—is referred to as the “Flower Moon.” But where did this name come from? According to the farmersalmanac, “Flower Moon” has origins in Native American, European, and Colonial American sources. The name is largely attributed to the Algonquin peoples and was further popularized by Jonathan Carver and Henry David Thoreau. The two referenced the “Flower Moon” or “Month of Flowers” in their writings. Carver stayed with the Dakota peoples in the Great Lakes region in the 1700s and likely learned the name from them. Thoreau, for his part, used the name when referencing Carver’s work. May’s full moon also goes by other names: “Leaf Budding Moon” and “Budding Moon” (Cree), “Planting Moon” (Lakota, Dakota), “Frog Moon” and “Egg Laying Moon” (Cree), and “Moon of the Shedding Ponies” (Oglala). Share this post as a reminder to your friends and followers of how important it is to go outside and look up every once in a while. 🌕 #full...
