Today's
#Countdown2Kickoff is the most significant of all the days. On September 11th, 1999, the Aggies faced the Western Oregon Wolves. Reserve Running Back,
#25 Sam Paneno has earned his first career start that day and rushed for a career high, 114 yards and two touchdowns. On the first play of overtime Sam dislocated his knee and was rushed to the UC Davis Medical Center. Unfortunately the injury had disrupted blood flow to the lower leg and foot and due to these complications, UCDMC orthopedic surgeons deemed it necessary to amputate the lower portion of his right leg. National attention fell upon this soft spoken running back and support for Paneno came from all parts of the country. Sam has never been the type of person to ask, "Why me?" Instead, his positive attitude and unmatched resiliency inspired his teammates and all Aggie football players that followed him. The
#25 jersey is the only number to be retired in the Aggie football program, and his jersey still has it's own lock...
