Three Americans had been involved in the promotion playoff to the Serie A; Venezia’s Tanner Tessmann and Gianluca Busio, and Palermo’s Kristoffer Lund. Venezia and Palermo ended up facing off in the semifinal, Venezia won both home and away games. In the first leg, they won 1-0 away from home and today, they won 2-1 with big performances from Tessmann and Busio. The 22-year-old Tessmann played the whole game today and opened up the scoring with an amazing goal from outside of the 18-yard-box. Lund, who’s also only 22, didn’t play today as he suffered a minor injury in the first game. He’s still expected to come to the USMNT training camp next week, while Tessmann and Busio will be with the U.S. U-23s in Kansas City. Palermo’s loss means there will be no teams from Sicily again in the Serie A next season. For Venezia, they face either Catanzaro or Cremonese in the final.
