It was such a privilege to deliver the 59th annual commencement address at West Valley College, in San Jose, California. I knew I was at home when I arrived and they handed me a pin that read, “Órale” then told me, “Go be yourself.” Looking out into the thousands of faces in the crowd last night, there were faces just like mine. Students whose stories reflected my own. Some even said I inspired them to keep going. But really, they inspired me and gave me a reminder that what I am doing is so crucially important, not just for my family, but for the Latino community. Leaving the commencement, an abuela of a graduate stopped me for a picture. Then, she grabbed my arm and pulled me in to come closer.
