“I recently got to do my own projects in the lab, which is really exciting. I realized how much I liked research, so I applied to the UNMC Summer Undergraduate Research program…I decided to do it because I wanted the opportunity to be in a different lab, to try out different environments and research areas.” Carley Conover, majoring in Biological Systems Engineering, spent her summer studying the process in which ticks transmit Borrelia burgdorferi, a Lyme disease-causing bacterium, as part of the Summer Undergraduate Research Program at the UNMC. “Having a background in DNA extraction techniques, knowing how primers work, and being able to understand what I'm doing and why I'm doing it, it's really important. It’s also cool because I can combine my knowledge in biology, engineering, and chemistry through this program.” During her time in the program, she was able to learn new techniques, develop new skills and gain insight into what specialties she wants to pursue in the future....
