I am still dealing with the repercussions of an eating disorder that began when I was 11 years old. At the time my ED started, I had no idea that I was causing lasting damage to both my physical and mental health. I truly believed that I was doing what it took to be the best runner I could be. It wasn’t until 9 years and 5 bone stress injuries later that I fully accepted how damaging my ED was. At that point, it was so ingrained that it felt nearly impossible to recover, but I knew that if I wanted to run, I had no choice but to try.
I don’t think most people realize the severity & prevalence of EDs, or the importance of early intervention. I’ve seen so many running careers come to an end because of EDs..EDs that could have been prevented with the correct knowledge, support, and intervention.
