The city of Springfield contracted Stiles in the summer of 1929 and 18 holes opened in early 1930. It is assumed that the additional 9 holes were not built for financial reasons. From its beginnings, Franconia has always been financially friendly to golfers - charging just 50 cents per round when $2 was the going rate. With walking rates of just $29 on weekends, they haven't strayed from their affordable ethos.
