Today, on a new episode of the Team Deakins Podcast, we’re excited to share our conversation with the inventor of the Steadicam: Garrett Brown (YENTL, THE SHINING, BOUND FOR GLORY). Garrett shares how Stanley Kubrick utilized the unique properties of the Steadicam while filming THE SHINING to move the camera “like a ghost” through the empty halls of the Overlook Hotel and chase the indefatigable child actor Daniel Lloyd over miles of carpet. Garrett later walks us through an exercise demonstrating the vestibule-ocular reflex (the human eyes’ and brain’s ability to stabilize our vision) and makes the case for using the Steadicam to simulate human eyesight on film. At one point, we ask Garrett if he believes anyone can use the Steadicam, and Garrett asks us, at the end, if we’re still having fun after all these years.
We hope you enjoy the episode!
