On Wednesday, cinematographer Steve Yedlin (GLASS ONION, STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI, LOOPER) joins us on the newest episode of the Team Deakins Podcast. Steve reveals the approach he and director Rian Johnson took towards designing the look of THE LAST JEDI and how they ended up shooting the project on both film and digital cameras. Steve extols the virtue of not letting tech dictate the direction of a film and champions the camera as a data collection machine rather than the look maker itself. We discuss why Steve doesn’t grade on set and how, during production, he avoids focusing on things that belong in the proper domain of post. Steve later shares how he and Rian worked on LOOPER and avoided being baited into adding additional VFX to what is otherwise a visually straightforward film.
Hear more from Steve in two days!
