Today, Team Deakins is happy to present our conversation with savvy director Ryan White (GOOD NIGHT OPPY, THE KEEPERS, ASSASSINS) covering his career in documentaries and his thoughts on filmmaking. After welcoming him on, Ryan starts off strong by revealing how he’s used the podcast to study a particular department to help secure a job. We discuss Ryan’s mission to prove that documentaries can be cinema and how he uses the scripted filmmaker’s toolkit in his own work. He reflects on the state of the industry in which he came up that forced him to begin directing in his mid-20s and laments how today’s industry can delay a young filmmaker from taking the first steps towards starting their own career by employing them to assist those already established. We discuss how Ryan’s love for new challenges fueled his career and, at the end, debate what is and is not a documentary and to what extent those judgements matter.
We loved speaking with Ryan, so we hope you enjoy the episode!
