In this episode, we learn that Jess originally wanted to be a lighting designer and he shares with us his journey to becoming a production designer. Jess thinks that directors like designers with a strong idea and it’s easier to stretch his department's dollar outside of Los Angeles and New York. Jess talks about creating the submarine shot on Hail, Caesar!, working with a bigger budget on Lone Ranger, designing with different lighting sources in No Country For Old Men, and working with Roger to balance exposure for inside and outside Michael Stuhlbarg's office in A Serious Man.
