ARTIFACT CONSERVATION! Did you know? Our marine archaeologists discovered a grid iron (grill cooking grate) from a shipwreck — a 1782 British Loyalist Ship! This artifact has been on view since 2016 with many other items that were excavated from the ship (600 in all!) — cannon, carronade, ship bell, guns, cauldrons, silverware, shoe buckles, buttons, plates, etc.
After several years, some artifacts needed re-treatment to keep them in the best condition possible. This grid iron from the Wrecked! exhibit is an example of such an artifact. It was taken off display in mid-December and our conservators are finishing the restoration re-treatment before it goes back on display by the end of the month.
The Wrecked! Exhibit is on view daily in the basement of the Keepers' House. Museum hours are 10 AM to 6 PM seven days a week. Tickets and details:
