This #VeteransDay, we honor former St. Augustine Lighthouse Keeper Cardell Daniels (pictured), along with the brave men and women who have and continue to serve our country. Your service is truly appreciated. Cardell Daniels was the St. Augustine Lighthouse Keeper from 1935 – 1943. Having served as head Keeper during World War II, Cardell faced a unique decision many of his predecessors hadn’t, remain a civilian or join the service. As such, Daniels joined the United States Coast Guard, allowing his continued duty as Lighthouse Keeper. Given a military uniform and an official title, the Coast Guard tasked Daniels and other service members with patrolling the coast of St. Augustine, Florida, to keep an eye out for German U-Boats.
