Augustin Fresnel was a French physicist who developed lighthouse lenses in the early 1820s. He created six relatively standard sizes called orders. The St. Augustine Lighthouse has a first-order lens that stands 9 feet tall and 6 feet in diameter, containing 370 individual pieces of glass called prisms. Its sheer size allows the light projecting from the lens to be seen up to 25 miles out at sea. Our Fresnel lens is one of only ten first-order lenses still in use by its original lighthouse in the United States. • • • • #StorySaturday #Fresnel #Lens #Prism #LoveYourLighthouse #StAugustineLighthouse #StaLighthouse #NationsOldestPort #StAugustine #KeepTheLightShining
