Hey, Yawl! 🛶 After six years of effort, the volunteer boatbuilders of the Museum’s Heritage Boatworks program have nearly completed STORM, a replica of a Revolutionary War-era Royal Navy ship’s boat. Volunteer Jim Millette says, “It is constructed of local materials, cypress, and live oak, as would have been used in St. Augustine circa 1760. Of a type known as a ‘yawl boat,’ construction was complicated as no detailed plans existed. Each of the 18 planks was individually measured, shaped, steamed, and then shaped to the ribs.” Join us in acknowledging our volunteer boatbuilders for their tremendous craftsmanship on this vessel!
