Join us on Wednesday, May 11th, at 6:30 PM for a FREE special event! Learn about a Trophy of War Discovery and the Continental Gunboat Philadelphia! As a part of the staugustinehistoryfestival, the Museum will host an event featuring Dr. Paul Johnston of the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History and Dr. Roger Smith of the St. Augustine Historical Society. Dr. Paul Johnston will present a lecture on the Continental Gunboat Philadelphia, which was one of a fleet built by General Benedict Arnold in the summer of 1776. The presentation will explain the history, recovery, display, and current status of the famous shipwreck. Dr. Roger Smith will discuss how and why a pewter button with “U.S.A.” distinctly revealed on its front side may have been a trophy of war. Find out how much history you can learn from discovering a single button! RSVP at esnow@staugustinelighthouse.org or call Liz at 904-829-0745 ext. 245.
