Did you know during the Great Depression, we almost lost our stripes? In the second part of the letter, Beck asks Keeper Malloy what his thoughts are on the recommendation. He also asks for details about the painting process: how often is the tower painted? How long does it take, and what are the costs? In his response, dated June 19th, 1932, Keeper Malloy states that the tower is painted every two years. It requires 35 gallons of paint (15 gallons of black and 20 gallons of white, including boiled oil, zinc, drier, etc.); the total cost of the paint is $52. Malloy says that he doesn't believe that the paint can be removed fully and that the "black stripe would be difficult to remove." He continues by saying that "whitewashing would be more economical in the event the black paint could be removed, but would require at least two applications a year."
