Did you know during the Great Depression, we almost lost our stripes? On June 13th, 1932, a proposal was sent to the Office of the Superintendent of the 6th District to remove the day mark from the St. Augustine Lighthouse. The first part of the letter states the recommendation from Mr. F. P. Dillon, Superintendent of Lighthouses on General Duty. The quote below is from his report. "So far as actual navigational needs are concerned, in the interest of economy it is recommended that the brick masonry towers of the district, particularly Cape Romain, Charleston, Tybee and St. Augustine, be changed to natural brick color. It is believed that the navigational need of these daymark colors is imaginary rather than real, having passed out with the large sea going sailing ship. [The] unusual markings still attract the attention and curiosity of tourists."
