It’s #InternationalCatDay! Do you know the infamous story of Smokey the cat at the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum? In the 1930s, the St. Augustine Lighthouse Keeper was Cardell D. Daniels. He had two children, Cardell “Cracker” Daniels and Wilma Daniels. Smokey, the family’s pet cat, was cherished by Wilma Daniels. Her brother Cracker would regularly use the tower to launch his model airplanes and parachutes. After safely parachuting several objects off the tower, he decided it was time for a live experiment. Cracker attached a make-shift parachute to Smokey and tossed him 140 feet from the tower’s observation deck. Miraculously, Smokey survived the fall, showing up at the tower a few weeks later. A few years ago, Wilma and Cracker visited the Museum, and Cracker confessed to the deed, confirming the story. #SillySunday #LoveYourLighthouse #StAugustineLighthouse #StaLighthouse #NationsOldestPort #StAugustine #KeepTheLightShining
