On July 10, 1873, there was an accident involving three Pittee sisters, Mary, Eliza, Carrie, and an unknown African-American girl. The girls were riding in a cart, and the wooden board that stopped it from going into the water was not in place. The cart carrying the girls flipped into the water, trapping them underneath.
