At dusk, imams Bekir Büyükbaş and Yunus Balcıoğlu sounded the Islamic call to prayer, which resonated through our Concert Hall foyer. From the highlands of Tuva to our Concert Hall, the guttural throat singing of Huun Huur Tu painted images of verdant landscapes and snow-tipped mountains. With high spirits and even higher notes, Callie Day and her band exemplified the conviction and devotion that have become synonymous with gospel music. A generational musician, Dada Khan’s soaring voice carried the weight of a centuries-old oral vocal tradition from the sand dunes of Rajasthan to Singapore.
In music across the ages, faith and culture, the power of the voice has stirred souls and invoked deep emotion. It was a blessing for all, including us, to have felt this in person at A Tapestry of Sacred Music, which took place at Esplanade from 12 – 14 April 2024.
