We all know it takes a village to raise a child. Michele LaMarr-Suggs is building that supportive community for so many Philadelphia-area families. A nurse midwife at Pennsylvania Hospital, Michele saw a lot of patients of color who were fearful of financial instabilities brought on by the pandemic back in 2020. In an effort to ease anxieties and reduce Black maternal health inequity, Michele organized an annual community baby shower. Here, expectant parents can receive all the baby essentials, along with resources provided by pre- and postpartum doulas, pantry items and produce, and emotional support. She receives donations from organizations across the region, including Penn Medicine CAREs grants.
