The Hooked on Books 📚 program provides a new book each month for second grade students in the School District of Lancaster to take home and share with family and friends. Implemented by the district and the Lancaster Education Foundation (LEF), the program's goal is to improve childhood literacy while also helping students build an at-home library.
Longtime LEF volunteer and lancastergeneralhealth (LGH) Manager of Language Services Evelin La Paz received a Penn Medicine CARES Grant to help support the effort. “In my role at LGH, providing language access to individuals and families with limited English proficiency, I have witnessed first-hand how literacy and health are correlated,” she says.
“Initiatives like Hooked on Books build bridges to help eliminate disparities for students in the district, which has a large population of disadvantaged children and youth."
