It was a bold, visionary idea that is now being hailed as a cancer cure. CAR T cell therapy turns patients’ own immune cells into weapons to fight their cancer. A new study shows two of our cancer patient pioneers were leukemia-free a decade after receiving the personalized cellular treatment, which was first developed at Penn and approved by the FDA in 2017. The two patients, Doug Olson and Bill Ludwig, made headlines in 2010 when they became the first people treated with CAR T therapy made from their own immune cells as part of an Abramson Cancer Center clinical trial. The treatment eradicated their end-stage leukemia and, in a study published this week by the research team, their experiences reveal new clues about the groundbreaking therapy. “We can now conclude that CAR T cells can actually cure patients,” said immunotherapy trailblazer Carl June, MD.
