We’re honored to have Dr. Elizabeth Howell represent Penn Medicine today at the whitehouse. Along with vp, she spoke to Black women touched by miscarriage and challenging childbirths and detailed ways society and the medical community need to do better. Under Dr. Howell's leadership, our Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is continuing to study racial inequalities in obstetrics and address inequalities with programs like Penn-developed Heart Safe Motherhood. In order to address high rates of maternal mortality and morbidity in the Black and brown population, Dr. Howell calls for the standardization of care, bias training, and better listening to their patients’ voices. “The elevated rates of maternal death for Black and brown women are unacceptable…Over 60 percent of these maternal deaths and a significant portion of these maternal morbidities are preventable," she said.
