Yesterday, Mary Simpler, a cancer survivor and nurse in the Cardiovascular Recovery Unit at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital served as the honorary bat girl at the Orioles home game against the Red Sox. In 2013, Mary went through surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation treatment for #BreastCancer. She was fortunate that she had an army of support during her battle with cancer. If not for the encouragement, love, and support, she doesn’t think she would have made it through. Now cancer-free, Mary has turned being a survivor into a true supporter for others battling breast cancer. Her non-profit charity called Mary’s Army holds fundraisers and drives to provide support to breast cancer patients. Mary and her army visit our local hospitals and give flowers, balloons, and gift baskets to breast cancer patients receiving chemotherapy.
