VIDEO EDITOR // I find myself in a lot of conversations with people who have the idea that video editing is literally just getting a lot of footage and cutting it up. There are definitely projects that call for flying through footage and fast cutting for sure. However, truly being a video editor should be way more involved. Any video editor who tells you they’ll just quickly throw it together and get it right back to you, should alarm you. For me, research and organization is everything in respectfully, truthfully assembling a story. That takes time. I ask a lot of questions. I learn everything I can. I watch every clip and sort it both in my brain and in the project file. I look at every asset and log it for reference. I may not use it all, but it is all significant information. For the sanuk project documenting jayseadevoe ’s paddle around Catalina Island, Jaysea is schooling me on nautical miles and I’m using googlemaps on satellite to recognize pivotal moments in the footage.
