RECAP: Continuing their hot start to the 2021 season, the No. 6 Long Beach State men's water polo team defeated Redlands and Air Force on Sunday to wrap up play at the Inland Empire Classic.
To open play Sunday the Beach (8-0) defeated tournament host Redlands 15-3 to start the morning.
It was a balanced effort by the team as 10 Beach athletes scored, and Rafael Real Vergara and Garrett Zaan led the team with three goals.
Picking up the win with eight saves was junior Liam Ward.
In the final match of the tournament for LBSU, the Beach got off to a slow start against Air Force leading 4-2 at halftime.
With a solid defensive performance and great shooting, the Beach took an 8-2 lead after shutting out the Falcons in the third period.
The Beach pulled away for good in the fourth quarter outscoring Air Force 7-2 – in large part to the Falcons pulling their goalie to take a man advantage multiple times and the Beach forcing turnovers and scoring on the empty net.
