The #NobelPrize was awarded today to physicists Rainer Weiss, Barry Barish and Kip Thorne for their roles in the landmark detection of gravitational waves—ripples in the fabric of spacetime that Einstein predicted more than a century ago. “We’re all thrilled,” said Assoc. Prof. Daniel Holz, whose #UChicago team is part of the international #LIGO collaboration that announced the discovery in 2016. Holz and his colleagues are developing ways of using the research to open new frontiers in astronomy.
