Black Music Appreciation Month, celebrated each June, was created to recognize the influence of Black musicians, composers, singers, and songwriters on American culture. In celebration of the month we want to shed a light on Richmond’s rich musical history and landmarks such as the Hippodrome Theater (hippodrome_venues) , a mecca for Black talent and entertainment. 🎶🎹🎷 📍 Located on the famed 2nd Street, “The Deuce”, in Richmond’s Jackson Ward neighborhood, the Hippodrome first opened in 1914 as a vaudeville and movie theater. It would later became a celebrated musical locale attracting acts such as Billie Holiday. Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway and many Virginia-born performers like Bill “Bojangles” Robinson and Ella Fitzgerald. Today, the beautifully restored Hippodrome Theater serves as a one-of-a-kind event and entertainment venue. 🖤🎙 #BlackMusicMonth #GrabABite #PlanATrip #CatchAVibe #VisitBLKRVA #VisitRichmondVa
