On July 26- right in the middle of my training for @chimarathon and @nycmarathon- I went to the doctor only to have my worst fear confirmed- I had cancer. For over 3 years, I had a Synovial Sarcoma tumor growing in my left hamstring. It was a small bump that sent a shock through my leg every time I sat down, but one that I became numb to. After consulting a family medicine doctor and being told “it ~might~ be a muscle strain”, which I knew was not the case, I tried not to think much of it, and I kept on running. That was until May of this year, when I was laying in bed and a shock went through both legs, from my hips to my toes, paralyzing me for nearly a minute. I got lucky- the cancer did not spread. I did not need to have chemotherapy or radiation. I did not lose my hair, a limb, or my life, but some people are not as lucky as I was.
