I started by trying to paddle by myself from my knees, but the reality was that (even with wide knees) my bump was just too big for me to get my hands deep enough to find any real power. Very quickly I learned that, for me, catching a wave was only going to happen with a little push from a friend. While I LOVE to help others in whatever way I can, asking for help has never been a strength of mine. Truth be told, I find even just receiving help from someone who is offering to be hard. While this fierce independence has served me in a lot of ways over the years, I am realizing now how important it really is to be able to ask for and receive support.
