Having a pack that is comfortable and truly fits your needs can totally make or break a backpacking trip. After more than 1,000 miles in diverse terrain, I can honestly say that my PCT 50L pack from mountainhardwear is the most comfortable pack I’ve ever owned. In the desert, there were often days where the water caries were so long that I’d have to carry upwards of 4L of water (nearly 9 extra lbs) at a time and, in the Sierra, I had the awkward and heavy bear can requirement. Having a pack that was still lightweight but distributed weight well was key and, even loaded to capacity, I found that I was able to keep the weight of my pack rested on my hips and not my shoulders. This pack also has easy-access, front-facing water bottle pockets so it’s easy to stay hydrated, and really practical external pockets on the front which help keep me organized throughout the day.
