66 years of NYRR! ππ₯³
Today, NYRR celebrates its 66th anniversary. π We were founded in the Bronx on June 4, 1958, and led by Ted Corbitt, the first African American to compete in the Olympic marathon. We spearheaded the first New York City Marathon in 1970, and six years later, we took it out of Central Park and made it the amazing five-borough event the world has come to know.
In 1999, we began offering youth programming and now we serve over 137,000 kids nationwide, including 60,000 in New York City, with free
#RisingNYRR physical education resources for educators. We host 16 free, weekly community run/walks across New York City and Jersey City parks with
#NYRROpenRun, provide free walking and fitness programs at 19 local sites with
#NYRRStriders, among many other community-focused initiatives.
Our mission continues and here's to 66 more. π₯³π
