Dozens of advocates gathered at Berkeley Chess Club this morning in response to the publication of the California Supreme Court opinion that will now allow UC Berkeley to construct on the site.
Under Assembly Bill 1307, signed into law in September 2023, the court dismissed concerns regarding student noise as an environmental impact. As stated in the opinion, state institutions of public education are also not required to consider alternative sites for construction as part of their EIRs in accordance with AB 1307.
Gathered under a yellow marquee tent set up at the intersection of Haste Street and Telegraph Avenue, park activists read the court opinion before discussing what they will do before construction starts and which avenues of action will be pursued.
