One of the most widespread species on Earth, orcas are found in all oceans and most seas. They live in matrilineal communities, forming complex societies with unique dialects and cultures. (Fish hat, anyone?) Orcas are brainiacs! They have the second-heaviest brains among marine mammals (after sperm whales, which have the largest brain of any animal). And orcas have more gray matter and more cortical neurons than any mammal, including humans. With all that brain power to wield, they’re sophisticated problem-solvers, curious, and playful. (Hey, is that a rudder?) Some orca populations are threatened by diminishing food sources, pollution, and vessel traffic and noise. Along with our allies and supporters, the Center has worked for years to prevent the extinction of Southern Resident orcas, which range from central California to southeast Alaska.
