When we talk about meditation, we don’t talk about shutting off your mind.
So many people feel like they “can’t” meditate because they can’t shut off their minds — they sit down, close their eyes and a million thoughts flash through their heads, getting worse and worse if you choose to dwell on them. So, they stop trying. But that’s not what meditation is.
Meditation is the practice of noticing. It’s about being aware of the thoughts going through your mind, acknowledging them, seeing what thoughts are serving you and what aren’t and figuring out where they come from. These thoughts are always present, whether you notice them or not. Practicing meditation helps you bring them to the forefront so you can find those thoughts that are causing you harm and learn to let them go.
It’s not about stopping the noise — it’s about learning to sift through it.
