With great expectations, La Gran Uruguaya in New York opened its doors to fans of La Celeste for this pivotal Group H match, serving up traditional pastries, excellent meat, and classic drinks to set the tone for the afternoon. With such a warm atmosphere, it felt like watching a game in any Montevideo shop. The second half brought us a roller coaster of emotions, though, and the Uruguayans at the restaurant could barely contain their anguish as their country failed to equalize on a handful of occasions. With this result, the final group stage match against Ghana will essentially become a knockout game for both nations. It’s another old rival that Uruguay must face, and the “charruas” will be hoping it goes better than today.
