That’s only the latest in what has been an escalating firestorm in Prairie Village — sparked by city leaders considering zoning changes to allow for more affordable housing. But the idea has ignited fierce opposition from residents who argue the city of 23,000 people is too dense to welcome a multi-unit housing they fear would crowd the tree-lined suburb. Prairie Village is the most recent and extreme example among a number of municipalities finally trying to address an affordable housing crisis. As home values skyrocket and average home sale prices countywide soar above $500,000, Johnson County has become increasingly out of reach for many working- and middle-class families.
