A new group called Sensible Missouri wants the state to ask voters in 2024 to allow Kansas City and other local governments to enact tougher gun rules than Missouri, which has one of the loosest firearm regulations in the country. Three versions of the proposed constitutional amendment were filed this week. Current Missouri law bars local governments from creating tougher regulations than the state. Every version of the ballot measure would empower Kansas City and Jackson County to pass ordinances that regulate the possession and transfer of guns. The proposals come as Kansas City continues to grapple with high homicide rates and a strained relationship between police and community members. Halfway through 2023, 100 people have been killed in homicides, and the city is on pace to experience its deadliest year yet.
