Step into the expansive new terminal at Kansas City International Airport and there is so much for the eye to take in — the light, the glass, the shimmering mobiles and natural wood overhead — that it might be easy to overlook the towering wall of stone in front of you. Pale gray, looking from a distance perhaps more like wood panels than the honed limestone it is, it stands 30 feet high and extends 732 feet across the full length of the terminal behind the check-in area. As architectural features go, it looks so functional that, if it conjures any thoughts, one might be, “Uhm, where’s my gate to Albuquerque?” But if you knew the whole story, you could see that wall in a whole other light.
