I recommend staying in Redding and arriving here early in the morning. There was not a soul in sight, so you might get it all to yourself like we did! The challenging ~4 mile (3 hour) hike from the Butte Lake camping/parking area leads you straight up this steep and dramatic cinder cone. Once you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with incredible views of the colorful Painted Dunes and Fantastic Lava Beds. For the best lighting and photography, make sure to go for sunrise! Please stay on the trails and avoid making footprints in untouched areas so that this location stays as special as it is.
