I was disappointed in myself how it took me much more intentionality to have compassion for the parent to the hostage because of the rhetoric that surrounded his telling of the story. Still I'm reminded how each of us is caught in systems that at the end of the day don't want every single person to thrive and when we buy into those systems that cut one another down then the system wins and the humans don't.
