I have had the privilege of being present at the birth of my three children. One does not need to have experienced childbirth firsthand to know that birth is an excruciating act: physically, mentally, and emotionally. It’s messy, painful, nothing like the movies, and, for most who are tasked with caring for this new human, can provoke fear, worry, and trepidation beyond anything known before.
Obviously, my experience was nothing in comparison to my wife’s, but I know that upon holding each child, even in the face of the roller coaster to come, there was an overwhelming sense of hope for the world, an unspoken challenge to nurture new life, and a daunting realization of life changed forever.
