Like any influence we hold, we can either use it to build up or to tear down. Unfortunately too often power is used to protect and build up that which the powerful already possess: resources, political influence, and yes, more power. When the powerful adopt a posture of self-preservation it is the powerless who suffer: those in poverty, those without access to resources, and those who are on the outside looking in. To turn back the tide of inhospitable use of power, a different story must be told: one of welcome, generosity, and kindness.
