Arguably, one of the worst, most dangerous manifestations of Christian practices is when Christians begin to litmus test one another: in politics, in culture, and, of course in doctrine. We litmus test by how we vote on a particular issue, what we share or do not share on the socials, or how we may express a singular theological position. Too many people claim that God loves everyone, but still hold a very rigid understanding of who is “in” and who is “out” as if that is their job. We can each hold core beliefs, but if we believe that our particular slice of the Christian pie has been given the keys and the responsibility to determine what makes a true, pure, or right Christian, we are playing God.
