The month is June and by virtue of that, Black Music Month is in full effect. Here at OkayPlayer, we celebrate music everyday that span across the spectrum but our legends of Jazz will always deserve their own moment. Known for his versatility and ability to stay ahead of the curve when it came to stylistic developments in Jazz, Miles Davis was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. Over the course of his 40+ year career, he created over 60 albums including classics like 1959’s “Kind Of Blue” and 1970’s “Bitches Brew.” Hailing from Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Thelonious Monk cultivated a unique improvisation style and made honest contributions to the “standard” jazz repertoire we know today. Dating all the way back to 1979 and created by former president Jimmy Carter, the month aims to recognize, honor and celebrate Black musicians and their contributions to the alchemy of American culture.
