I remember feeling so trapped & miserable, but fully believing that I had to make myself as small as possible to be successful. I didn’t want to do it, I HAD to.
But after the injuries started adding up, I realized I had to change to have any chance at a future in running. Unless I had been completely backed into a corner, I never would have recovered. That’s the scary thing about eating disorders in the running community—it’s nearly impossible to get someone to change their course until it becomes detrimental.
However, I’ve slowly proved to myself that it was always detrimental; being underfueled does not improve performance. Proper nutrition, intentional training, and consistency are what enable us to reach our potential, and an ED inhibits all of those. It’s always a good time to recover, even when it seems scary, impossible, or like the end of your running career. Trust me, I understand, but your ED is lying to you.
