Iranian singer Shervin Hajipour (shervinine) won the first Grammy award in the “Best Song for Social Change” category for his revolutionary song “Baraye.” The award was presented by the First Lady of the United States Jill Biden flotus.
The Recording Academy said it was “deeply moved by the overwhelming volume of submissions” for Baraye, which received over 95,000 out of 115,000 of all submissions for the new category.
Hajipour, 25, composed the song from tweets by Iranians stating why they’re protesting. The lyrics talk about corruption, censorship, gender discrimination, environmental degradation, and the lack of fundamental rights under the Islamic Republic.
The song received over 40 million views on Instagram within 48 hours until authorities forced Hajipour to take it down and arrested him on September 29, 2022. He was released on bail on October 5.
