Yesterday, Hamid Noury, a former Iranian official, was sentenced to life in prison by a Swedish court for committing grave war crimes by participating in the mass execution and torture of political prisoners in the 1980s. Between late July and September 1988, the Iranian authorities forcibly disappeared and extrajudicially executed thousands of political prisoners. Their bodies were dumped in unmarked individual and mass graves. Amnesty International has put the number executed at around 5,000; however, "the real number could be higher".
